Tapping Tinder To Scout IT Talent? — An Austrian HR Company Had The Guts To Give It A Try
From swipes to skills: Recruiters start looking for IT talent in unusual places like dating apps. A promising strategy or a failing love-affair?
There are many job platforms claiming to be “The Tinder of Recruiting”, but what if you used the dating platform itself for talent hunt? Ever thought of switching from swipes to skills? An Austrian HR firm tried it out and looked for IT-Talent where others seek romance and love. Their tinder experiment didn’t unveil hidden IT-talent yet, but they are not the only ones who tried swiping right for labor. Some are very successful with it.
“Sometimes you have to look for talent in unlikely places. Believe it or not, but we tried scouting IT talent on Tinder”, a friend working with an Austrian HR company told me recently.
“Wait, what? Tinder? The real Tinder? You mean the dating platform? Not any of those job platforms claiming to be ‘The Tinder for Recruiting’ or something?” I laughed.
“Yes”, she said.
“Just think about it, IT guys are often introverts, they might choose to look for connections on platforms like Tinder instead of hunting in the wild. So, we gave it a try and started recruiting on the dating platform. We didn’t make this a big story because we weren't very successful in seeking labor instead of love on the App yet. However, it was an interesting experiment that we might have ended too early.”
Seeking Love And Jobs?
I started thinking about it. It wasn’t a bad idea at all.
With over 75 million users worldwide, Tinder might be a hidden gem for recruiters. 18% of people on Tinder are in fact open to job opportunities. And 30% of millennials are using dating apps for networking. That's right! Tinder's not just for finding love anymore—it's a hotspot for making professional connections.
That makes 58% of HR experts believe unconventional methods like Tinder can snag you the right candidates.
And there are indeed firms reporting big wins in the Tinder talent hunting game.
Are We Hot Or Not?
Using Tinder for hiring is surprisingly simple. Employers set up profiles showcasing their company vibe, values, and job openings. By swiping through potential candidates, they can quickly see if they're a match with the company's goals. Job seekers, on the other hand, can flaunt their skills and experiences. A mutual swipe? Well, that opens the door to exciting career prospects. You can kick off conversations with users who swiped right on your company profile, delving into their skills and interests. After a thorough exchange, you may want to handpick a match to hop aboard.
A Word Of Caution: Privacy And Professionalism Are Key
Sliding into someone's DMs for a job chat requires maintaining a pro-vibe throughout the whole process. With a personal touch, employers can highlight their career opportunities and catch the eye of potential hires. But remember to keep it professional, respect privacy, and transition to email or a job-specific chat once you've got a match. And avoid falling into the love-talk trap!
Finding The Needle In A Haystack With Unconventional Approaches
The hunt for IT talent in the job market can feel like searching for a needle in a haystack. So, more and more companies are hopping on the Tinder train for hiring. This fresh approach lets them tap into a vast talent pool and break free from traditional methods. By swiping through profiles, employers can quickly spot candidates with the skills they need. Plus, it adds a dash of excitement to the recruitment process, attracting candidates who might've overlooked the job otherwise.
Some companies have struck gold by reaching out to passive candidates on Tinder. Unlike job boards, Tinder lets recruiters connect with people who aren't actively job hunting. This opens doors to talented individuals who might've never considered a career change otherwise.
Especially attractive for hunting IT-talent working remotely from anywhere in the world: the popular dating platform gives you access to a diverse talent pool from around the globe. No local limitations, an untapped world of talent. This means better chances of finding that perfect fit, especially for hard-to-fill roles.
A Match Made In Heaven?
Tinder still remains an outlier when it comes to recruiting. What are your thoughts on these unconventional scouting tactics? Have you ever considered turning to Tinder for your IT talent search, or would you consider it? I'm curious to hear about your experiences in the comments.
Where do you find your IT talent match made in heaven?

🫶If you want to take the driver's seat and shape the future of recruiting yourself, I have a process for that: It’s called future scenario thinking and it allows deep dives into the driving forces, root causes, and mechanisms for every decision we need to make to co-create the future.
🎯It’s a highly effective brain trick invented by the U.S. Air Force to gain clarity, dive deep into internal and external driving forces, create a long-term vision, and shape the future you want to live in. It brings the subconscious to the conscious mind and enables us to make confident choices and decisions. When choosing things consciously, our whole experience changes drastically.
⚓We work with courageous business leaders, team captains, and individuals with an open mind for a different view who are brave enough to change the world by starting with themselves.
