Bureaucracy Gone Mad: Can AI Untangle the Red Tape?
Over the last 80 years, bureaucracy has increased by 200% to 700% in various sectors — crippling enterprises, taxing our patience, and squeezing the life out of every sector of the economy.
Since the mid-1940s, bureaucracy has been breeding like rabbits on steroids. With growth rates between 200% and 700%, one could say bureaucracy is one of the fastest-growing sectors in our economy. But, like a parasite, it’s sucking the life out of the very economy it depends on.
From the boardrooms of giant corporations to the dusty workshops of artisans, from labyrinthine tax codes to the crowded corridors of our schools, and even across vast farmlands, bureaucracy has exploded.
Enough is enough.
And there's an unexpected hero lurking in the shadows—it’s not another overpaid McKinsey consultant or a government task force. It’s AI, and it might just be the weapon we need to fight this madness.
Ironically, Bureaucracy Became Our Most Prolific Growth Industry
Let’s cut through the noise. Since the 1940s, bureaucracy in corporations has ballooned by 200-300%. Compliance departments, management layers, and HR specialists have sprouted like weeds after a summer rainstorm. Where there were once lean teams, now stand battalions of paper-pushers. Even the Harvard Business Review confirms it: we’re drowning in a bureaucratic swamp, with the number of managers doubling since the 1980s. It’s an epidemic, and no one seems to know how to stop it.
From Simple to Staggering: How the Tax Code Morphed into a Bureaucratic Beast
The tax system isn’t any better. In the 1940s, the U.S. federal tax code was a mere 400 pages—something a diligent accountant might tackle over a strong pot of coffee. Today? It’s a mind-numbing 70,000 pages, a monolith of confusion that’s increased by an estimated 400-500%. The story is the same around the globe. It’s not just taxes we pay; it’s our time, our sanity, and our soul.
Not to mention regulation in Europe, which is totally spiralling out of control. While the continent tightens bureaucratic oversight, countries like China charge ahead at lightning speed. This stark contrast risks leaving Europe tangled in red tape, while countries like China race into a new era of opportunity.
Craftsmanship Under Siege: Bureaucracy Choking Artisanship
Even the humble craftsman, once a symbol of independence, is now buried under a pile of bureaucratic rubble. Certifications, safety standards, licensing—you name it, it’s all there, and it’s grown by 100-200%.
Small trades have been choked by rules that seem to exist just to justify the existence of more rules.
Farmers in Chains: Red Tape Makes it Impossible to Grow Our Food
Bureaucracy has tightened its grip on agriculture, too, turning what was once a straightforward relationship between farmer and field into a maze of regulations, permits, and paperwork. From subsidy applications to environmental compliance forms, farmers now spend more time navigating red tape than tending to their crops.
With countless inspections, safety standards, and certifications required for even the smallest operations, it's no wonder many small-scale farmers feel overwhelmed.
The irony is that these bureaucratic layers, intended to ensure efficiency and safety, often end up stifling innovation and productivity on the very farms that feed us. Farmers are left to navigate an overwhelming labyrinth of permits, inspections, and compliance forms instead of focusing on what they do best: growing our food.
And the Winner Is: 700% Increase in Bureaucracy in EDUCATION!
And let’s not forget education, the one place that should be free from all this madness. Instead, it’s been hijacked. The number of non-teaching administrative roles in U.S. education has ballooned by 700% since 1950, while student enrollment has only doubled. How’s that for an equation?
Unchain Our Lives: Can AI Set Us Free?
But here's the twist in the tale: AI can help slash this red tape. Imagine an AI-driven workforce that automates bureaucratic tasks, processes documents faster than you can say "bureaucracy," and keeps track of compliance without the need for a dozen managers breathing down your neck.
In the future, AI could untangle tax filings in minutes, fill in forms for artisans, and streamline administrative tasks in education, freeing teachers to teach instead of filling out forms. It’s not a miracle—it’s technology waiting to be unleashed.
Bureaucracy is soul-crushing and turns human beings into soulless robots. We’ve let bureaucracy thrive for far too long. It’s time to fight back, and AI could be the weapon we need. Let’s not wait another 80 years to act. Demand change, embrace the future, and let’s get back to what really matters: creativity and humanity—unencumbered by the red tape that holds us back.

🫶If you now want to take the driver's seat, unbureaucratize your life and shape the future for yourself, I have a process for that: it's called future scenario thinking. Developed by the U.S. Air Force back in the 1940s, this technique dives deep into what drives decisions, helping us understand the root causes and mechanisms behind them. It's all about working together to shape the future we really want.
🎯It’s a highly effective brain trick that brings what's lurking in your subconscious to the forefront, helping you gain clarity, craft a long-term vision, and make confident choices. When we're intentional about our decisions, everything shifts dramatically in our experience.
